This past week my 9-year-old asked if he could make dinner. It was 6 p.m., the typical time we eat dinner, and I practically had dinner on the table at that point.

So obviously he didn’t make it that night.

The following night, he asked around 4 p.m., a much more reasonable time to make dinner.

And please excuse the images – I was not planning on posting this recipe but thought it was so great that JP wanted to make dinner for us I couldn’t resist. The plan is to make them again soon with better images.

With some suggestions from me (I suggested something fish related), he thought of these tuna sliders all on his own (with some inspiration from Pinterest).

I loved this learning exercise of him coming up with possible recipes to make, figuring out what we had on hand all while considering trying to make something our entire family would enjoy.

This gave him a glimpse into the life of mom, except that he’s typically one that will at least try what I make and most of the time enjoys it.

His younger brother, on the other hand, is much more challenging when it comes to trying new foods.

He also learned a valuable lesson that he needs to double-check the recipe when he’s adding ingredients. Let’s just say that instead of 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, he added 2 teaspoons!

Lesson learned.

Thankfully it was still edible!

Dietitian’s Dish

I’ve talked about the importance of protein in the diet before and tuna fish is an excellent way to consume it. With a 3-ounce serving containing only about 100 calories and 22 grams of protein, it’s time to add it to your menu! I also suggest choosing tuna fish packed in water instead of in oil to keep the calories in check.

Do your children help in the kitchen? I love the age my kids are now since they are all very capable of helping in several ways in the kitchen and most of the time love it. However, I do miss them at this age…
