Spiral Christmas Sugar Cookies

Fun and festive sugar cookies with Christmas sprinkles!

Ingredients
  

  • 2 sticks 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • Food coloring green and red
  • Christmas sprinkles

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Mix butter until creamed.
  • Add sugar until fully mixed, followed by egg, baking powder and vanilla extract.
  • Mix until all ingredients are combined and have a creamy texture.
  • Slowly add flour, 1 cup at a time until dough is no longer “sticky.”

To make spiral cookie shapes

  • Separate dough into two equal parts, coloring one with green food coloring and the another with red food coloring.
  • Roll each dough out to about 1/4 inch think and place each on cookie sheets lined with wax paper, then cover each with wax paper.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  • Remove from refrigerator and place dough sheets on top of one another and place on a cutting board.
  • Press edges together and cut edges of dough to form a rectangle.
  • Begin rolling dough slowly to form a jelly-roll loaf.
  • Pour Christmas sprinkles on a large plate.
  • Roll loaf gently over sprinkles until well coated.
  • Slice cookie loaf into 1/4 inch thick cookies.
  • Bake on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper for 8-10 minutes (don't over-bake, the cookies may not look done).
