Simple Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream {including a DIY Sundae Bar}

My kids and I had a blast making this Simple Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream with only 4 ingredients, including a sundae bar filled with tons of delicious toppings!

July is National Ice Cream Month and of course we had to celebrate it in a big way! I originally thought I would make parfaits with the kids however, they love adding a ton of toppings to the top of the ice cream so they are more like sundaes, right? Whatever you want to call these we had a blast making them. My mom bought us an ice cream maker last year so I thought why not try some homemade ice cream to go along with these delicious toppings.

I normally would have tried to create a unique flavor of ice cream but since I was making this ice cream specifically for my kids I thought I would stick with their favorite flavor and go for a ton of fun toppings. And although using an ice cream maker can be a bit of a time consumer, I only needed four ingredients so that definitely helped.

I used a wide variety of toppings which of course you can change according to your preferences. I found a muffin tin worked best for all ingredients and was a simple clean up. I thought about using colorful muffin liners which would have worked fine with the dry ingredients but not so well with the fresh fruit.

Dietitian’s Dish

You may be thinking why is a dietitian writing about ice cream?! Well, that’s exactly why I am discussing ice cream. I personally LOVE ice cream and my kids do too. I enjoy showing my readers how I live in moderation, which allows room for treats like ice cream. This means that I do not serve ice cream daily, but do so on random occasions and of course for special days like birthdays. I also keep portion sizes in mind. Check out the cup size I used for these sundaes. Only so much ice cream and toppings can fit in a smaller size cup or dish. Also, I added a variety of toppings including fresh fruit and nuts so we all had the options to choose healthier toppings. And guess what…a few of my kids chose the fresh fruit since it’s one of their favorite foods!
